Tattoos continue to become mainstream as the years go on; more people than ever have a tattoo or two. With this increase in the number of tattoos people are getting, we are also seeing an increase in people looking for safe and effective tattoo removal near them.
Maybe what once was really special to you no longer applies with your tattoo, or your tastes have simply changed. Whatever your reason is, no one should have to live with a tattoo that makes them feel embarrassed or self-conscious.
Tattoo removal is a notoriously long and sometimes painful process. It’s also important to go to an experienced provider with safe and effective equipment. This is your skin, after all! Not all laser tattoo removal is equal in terms of effectiveness.
At Levitt Medical Aesthetics, we provide the best laser tattoo removal near you in Albany, Oregon. Owned and operated by Dr. Scott Levitt, we take pride in providing Northwest Oregon with superior quality aesthetic services. One of our most popular skin treatments is tattoo removal.
Below, we’ve put together a guide that explains how it works, cost factors, treatment preparation, and more.
What is laser tattoo removal?
Laser tattoo removal is the safest, most effective way to remove a tattoo. Other options for tattoo removal include covering the tattoo with a larger one or surgical excision/removal. Both of these are not a great fit for most people who just want the tattoo gone as quickly and pain free as possible.
Laser tattoo removal uses laser energy to target tattoo pigments in the skin. The heat from the laser breaks up the pigment, which your body absorbs and eliminates. Different tattoo colors call for different wavelengths of laser energy to effectively target them.
Not all tattoo removal lasers are the same
This is one of the most important things to note when you decide to remove your tattoo via laser. Just like laser hair removal or skin rejuvenation lasers, not all laser machines are created equal. Overly cheap lasers will lead to poor quality results and cannot target all colors sufficiently. A superior quality laser is highly customizable and can treat a wide range of tattoo colors with different wavelengths.
At Levitt Medical Aesthetics, we use the Cartessa Quanta Discovery Pico Laser. This laser is the best in the business, with three different wavelengths that allow us to target all colors and lighter pigments that other lasers may leave behind.
The technology is also much faster than similar lasers, providing a much more comfortable and positive tattoo removal experience for our patients. This treatment approach is more effective because of Pico’s ability to work in extremely short bursts. While others pulse in nanoseconds, the Pico Laser pulses in picoseconds, which are 100 times shorter than nanoseconds.
Additionally, the Discovery Pico uses 3 different true laser wavelengths, allowing it to treat all colors of tattoos, including greens, reds, and yellows, which can often be very difficult for other lasers to remove. Having the appropriate laser wavelengths, as well as high peak powers, permits us to completely remove any tattoo that others simply can’t.
Along with tattoo removal, Pico can also resurface skin to smooth fine lines, wrinkles, and different types of scarring.

Preparing for your tattoo removal experience
There are several things you can do to prepare for your tattoo removal and make the process as seamless as possible.
Find a qualified provider and book a consultation
At Levitt Medical Aesthetics, we encourage consultations for all of our new patients. A good tattoo removal provider will want to have a consultation with you before treatment to ensure they can deliver your desired results.
For your consultation at our clinic, you will meet Dr. Levitt to discuss your tattoo, expectations for results, and the treatment process. He will listen to your needs, examine the tattoo you want removed, and provide his recommendations on how many treatment sessions will achieve optimal results.
Once you’ve asked any questions and fully understand the process, cost, and other information, we will book you for treatment!
Tattoo removal appointments
Before your appointment we ask that you clean the surface area of the tattoo and remove any hair. This is especially important on commonly hairy areas like the legs or chest. The pigment in your hair could affect the laser’s ability to target the pigment of your tattoo, so hair removal is crucial before treatment.
For the treatment session, Dr. Levitt can provide several ways to reduce any discomfort. We offer cooling, topical numbing medication, injectable numbing, and oral medications as needed for patients worried about pain.
Once you are comfortable and ready, your provider will begin your tattoo removal process with Pico Laser, working quickly and efficiently. Most treatment sessions are only 5 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area(s).
As with any skin treatment, you should avoid sun exposure in the treatment area. There is no downtime needed for recovery, but your skin may turn red and experience some swelling immediately afterward. This is normal and should subside within hours.
We will schedule your following treatment sessions per your customized treatment plan. Typically, our tattoo removal patients need 6 to 8 sessions for the best results. Most patients are able to achieve their goals with 3 to 6 treatment sessions. However, it’s important to understand that there are variables affecting tattoo removal. It may take 8-12 sessions for complete removal.

FAQs | Tattoo Removal Near You
Can my tattoo be completely removed?
With a high-quality laser, your tattoo can be completely removed. One of the reasons tattoos may not go away fully with some laser treatments is the laser cannot target certain colors, most commonly red, green, and yellow. Our Pico Laser has 3 wavelengths, allowing us to target any color efficiently. We also recommend several treatment sessions to completely remove your tattoo; this can range anywhere from 6 to 12 sessions.
How much will tattoo removal hurt?
Some of the other treatments that we perform with the Discovery Pico Laser, such as treating a no-downtime “laser facial” or melasma treatment, have minimal to no discomfort. Others, like laser tattoo removal, can be more painful.
Patients describe the feeling as a quick snap as the laser fires that goes away as soon as the laser treatment is complete. We also offer multiple ways to reduce pain during treatment, like cooling, topical numbing cream, and oral medication.
How much does laser tattoo removal cost?
The cost of laser tattoo removal largely depends on the size of the tattoo (pun intended). The larger the tattoo, the longer it takes to treat it each session and more sessions may be needed. We quote per treatment session at our practice, so the amount of sessions you need directly affects the price as well.
How many treatment sessions do I need?
The best way to determine how many treatment sessions you will need is with an in-person consultation. Dr. Levitt can examine your tattoo and discuss your goals with this treatment to make a recommendation on the number of treatment sessions based on your individual needs.
How old does my tattoo need to be before I can remove it?
Once a tattoo is fully healed at around 6 weeks, you can start the laser removal process. The older the tattoo the better, as faded, older pigment is easier to remove and your skin will be less sensitive than skin with a brand new-ish tattoo.
Are results permanent?
Yes, laser tattoo removal results from Pico Laser are permanent. Once the pigment is broken down, it cannot come back.
If you receive Pico Laser treatments for pigmentation, scarring, or wrinkles, the condition may return with age or as a result of lifestyle and skin care.
