The quickest path to glowing skin
Dermaplaning is a gentle and noninvasive procedure that creates smoother, more vibrant skin with a series of regular treatments.
Dermaplaning involves the use of a medical-grade scalpel to carefully scrape away peach fuzz and remove dead skin from the surface of the face. Unlike other abrasive or irritating skin treatments, dermaplaning does not result in any side effects or require any downtime. Dermaplaning can also be repeated regularly to maintain clear and youthful skin year-round.
At Levitt Medical Aesthetics, Dr. Scott Levitt is proud to offer safe and painless dermaplaning treatments to his patients interested in the latest in advanced skin care. Patients of all ages and skin types can benefit from dermaplaning, making it one of the most versatile skin care treatments available. With a series of dermaplaning treatment sessions, Dr. Levitt can help you clear away dead skin buildup, unclog pores, remove peach fuzz, and create a smoother complexion.

How it works
During a dermaplaning appointment, a medical-grade scalpel is gently scraped across the skin at a 45-degree angle to shave off fine hairs and remove dead skin cells that clutter the surface of the skin.
The blade is sharp enough to remove dead cells and shave fine vellus hairs and will not cause any harm to the skin when handled by a medical professional. Dr. Levitt is a board-certified physician with nearly a decade of experience in emergency medicine, ensuring his patients experience safe treatment from a well-qualified professional.
Dermaplaning is performed to give skin a radiant appearance by decluttering its surface, as well as removing hair and other debris from the epidermis. Following a dermaplaning appointment, skin appears radiant while feeling smoother than ever before. Topical skin products also work more effectively in the days following a dermaplaning treatment, and makeup application becomes much easier without the presence of vellus hair on the surface of the skin.

What to expect
As a gentle and noninvasive treatment, dermaplaning causes no irritating side effects.
Patients may notice their skin appears a little rosier immediately following an appointment, but their normal skin tone will gradually return after a few hours. Contrary to popular belief, vellus hair (AKA peach fuzz) does not grow back any faster or thicker after being shaved off, so patients do not need to worry about increased hair growth following dermaplaning treatments. Skin is more sensitive to sun exposure after exfoliation, however, so patients should ensure they use proper skin protection following dermaplaning appointments, as well as for general daily skin care.
No downtime is necessary, and patients are free to return to work or strenuous activities as desired.
Results are immediately evident as the skin will feel much smoother and look more vibrant and youthful. Exfoliation also increases the absorption rate of skin moisturizers, acne creams and other topical anti-aging products, so patients can enjoy an increased effectiveness of their skin products following dermaplaning appointments.
Dermaplaning can be repeated as often as desired because of its gentle nature, making it a great choice for patients with naturally dry or sensitive skin who may not be candidates for more abrasive skin care treatments.
Each dermaplaning appointment removes about three weeks-worth of dead skin cell buildup, so patients should plan on scheduling a treatment session every three to four weeks if they are interested in maintaining results year round. Dermaplaning can also be paired with other anti-aging skin treatments like microneedling for comprehensive skin care.

FAQ
Dermaplaning is effective for patients of all ages and skin types. Almost every patient interested in noninvasive dermaplaning treatments is a candidate, and Dr. Levitt evaluates each of his patients during an initial consultation to verify that they can receive safe treatment. Patients with open facial wounds, active acne breakouts or active cold sores will need to wait for their skin to heal and clear up before scheduling a dermaplaning appointment. Any raised bumps in the skin's surface can make dermaplaning more difficult and increase the potential for complications, although Dr. Levitt is more than capable of working around normal facial blemishes if necessary.
Dermaplaning appointments take approximately 15 to 30 minutes, with patients able to return home or to their normal schedules immediately afterward. During the quick treatment, Dr. Levitt first cleanses the skin and dries it thoroughly. He then pulls the skin taut and uses a scalpel and quick strokes to gently exfoliate the uppermost layer of dead skin cells without actually piercing the surface or causing irritation to the skin. The procedure is painless and does not require any topical anesthesia or numbing. Most patients find dermaplaning to be very comfortable and relaxing. After Dr. Levitt has gently shaved all areas of the face until they are smooth and clear, patients can leave their appointment and resume all normal activities.
No, dermaplaning will not cause the vellus hairs on your face to grow back any darker or thicker because the procedure does not trigger hair follicles. The hair will return just as it is, usually in about 2 to 4 weeks.
While you can use a regular razor to shave your face, you will not get the same results as you would if you see a physician who uses a proper dermaplaning tool, namely a surgical-grade scalpel. You will not get nearly the amount of dead skin and peach fuzz removed as you will with a professional dermaplaning treatment. We find that at-home DIYs and sharp blades rarely mix well - it's best to find an experienced and licensed professional for your dermaplaning to avoid risks of cuts or infection.
